Duino (Devin) is a delightful country close around the castle of the
Prince of Thurn und Taxis and the old castle, now reduced to a
picturesque ruin, a small well-protected fortress from the cliffs
overhanging the sea and joined by a passage in a fortified village
proper. Duino is also the country where the trail leads Rilke, walk
along the beautiful karst ridge overlooking the sea, a path dedicated
to the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who lived in Duino between 1811
and 1912 and by the presence of these places drew the inspiration for
the famous "Duino Elegies".
Duino is the country where the karst meets the sea, where the land
falls into a protected bay. A country rich in history and legends. The
two most famous relate to the legendary White Lady and the even more
legendary Dante Alighieri. Begin, for cavalry, the Dama Bianca.
On the precipice dominated by the old castle of Duino is easily an
isolated rock, with the form of a veiled woman, dressed in white.
According to popular tradition that is the famous White Lady, the wife
that the castle precipitated from the castle walls. A horrible end to
which, however, the sky was opposed. Just the sky, in fact, prevented
the woman from crashing and transformed, when he was still in flight,
in rock. Rock, pure white, that in certain very special night comes
alive and vague despair by the walls of the old castle.
Another popular legend tells that on a rock placed in the small
bay which lies between the two castles of Duino come and meditate Dante
Alighieri, host of Pagano della Torre. That rock, now famous, is for
all the "Scoglio di Dante".
